Description of Opportunity
The purpose of the Pellissippi State Community College’s Internship Program is to attract diverse candidates to the college who can provide a new perspective on organizational issues and introduce best practices within higher education or a departmental discipline.
All interns will be expected to rotate through various aspects of the department to gain institutional knowledge to include shadowing management. Interns will interact with executive leadership and, depending on the department, parents, students, and outside vendors.
The intern is responsible for finding suitable housing within the Knoxville metropolitan area. Preference in hiring will be given to Junior and Senior undergraduates and graduate students enrolled in a relevant degree program.
Internships may be conducted during any academic semester (18 weeks) or during the summer (11 weeks). Interns will be expected to work up to 30 hours per week Compensation* Undergraduate interns: $13 ; Graduate interns: $15
*Does not apply if the intern’s institution prohibits compensation in lieu of course credit.
Athletics Department Intern
Seeking motivated and dedicated intern(s) to join our collegiate athletic program in a variety of roles (see below). This internship offers a valuable opportunity to gain hands-on experience in supporting the operations and logistics of our athletic program. WUOT practicum opportunities: 6 students per calendar year
WUOT News 91.9FM is Knoxville’s NPR affiliate. The station accepts two practicum students each semester (Fall, Spring and Summer). Ideally, students work ~2 hours per day – those hours can be flexible anywhere between 8am and 5pm. Students must fulfill 150 hours of work time over the semester. Students also have the option to work on two or three days of the week for a longer stretch, if working every day is not an option. This practicum fulfills the requirements for JEM 492.
Requirements
Students should:
• Be majors in Journalism and Media with a strong interest in news
• Have strong media writing skills and a developing sense of good news judgment
• Be willing to cover press conferences or other live events outside of the office from time to time (most likely with another reporter, depending on experience/comfort level)
• Be willing to learn software and technologies used in radio and digital spaces, including Adobe Audition, Enco, and the station’s content management platforms.
• Be able to commit to a regular schedule and be a reliable, professional presence at the station
• Be able to commit to NPR’s ethics standards for the duration of the practicum
Students will have the opportunity to:
• Help write daily newscasts and pitch story ideas
• Interview guests on the phone and in person, and occasionally cover live events
• Cut soundbites for newscasts
• Contribute to long-form feature pieces either with reporting, research or editing
• Help the news director keep the news calendar up-to-date
• Help the news director and hosts with research for newscasts
