Professor Julie Andsager studies media, health, and public opinion. She examines how news and entertainment media construct messages about health and medicine, and how audiences interpret those messages.
Professor Andsager’s research has been published in Health Communication, Communication Research, Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly, the Journal of Communication, Women & Health, the American Journal of Men’s Health, and other journals. She is co-author of two books: Self versus others: Media, messages, and the third-person effect (with H. Allen White; Lawrence Erlbaum Associates, 2007) and Free expression in five democratic public (with Robert O. Wyatt & Ernest Martin; Hampton Press, 2004). She served as associate editor of Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly for 10 years.
Professor Andsager received her PhD from the University of Tennessee and BS and MS from Kansas State University. She is a former head of AEJMC’s Communication Theory & Methodology Division and the Commission on the Status of Women, as well as former president of the Midwest Association for Public Opinion Research. She has been awarded with AEJMC’s Hillier Krieghbaum Under-40 Award and named the AEJMC Commission on the Status of Women’s “Outstanding Woman in Journalism & Mass Communication Education.”
