Alumna trains as astronaut for science writing job
Science writer Miriam Kramer (JEM/’11) headed to Cape Canaveral, Fla. in early December to cover the AXE Apollo Space Academy for SPACE.com.
Designed to give away 23 seats aboard the XCOR Aerospace Lynx spacecraft, the space camp put recruits through a g-force simulator, air combat training and Zero-Gravity parabolic flights.
Kramer took part in the training as part of her assignment—one that she describes as anxiety-inducing and unique.

CCI Auditorium named in honor of JEM alumnus
University of Tennessee, Knoxville, alumnus Larry Patrick was recently recognized for his generous support to the College of Communication and Information. During the fall Board of Visitors meeting on Nov. 8, the college named its auditorium the Patrick Auditorium.
Patrick has given $1 million to CCI, the largest single cash gift in the college’s history, to establish a distinguished professorship to honor a longtime professor and administrator. Patrick also increased his estate gift to the college to $5 million.

Alumna founds event for media entrepreneurs
Travel writer and alumna Kristin Luna (JEM ’05) has a lot on her plate. Most recently, it was Nashville’s Music City Eats festival which she recapped on the Southern Living blog. Now, she is gearing up for the inaugural KEEN Digital Summit, a networking event she founded for digital media entrepreneurs.
KEEN, which stands for Keeping Entrepreneurs Engaged and Networking, will bring together journalists, publicists, editors, bloggers and Fortune 500 brands in Nashville, Tenn., Oct. 24-27, 2013.

JEM alumna to compete in 2013 Venice Film Festival
Two alumni of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, will represent the feature film “Little Brother” from Kazakhstan at the 70th Venice International Film Festival, one of oldest and most prestigious film festivals in the world.
WVLT-TV Account Executive Dinara Aprymova (BS / JEM ’09) served as executive producer of the film while her brother Alisher Aprymov (Business Administration, ’13) had a leading role. The film was written and directed by their father Serik Aprymov.
