Symposium on the 19th Century Press, the Civil War, and Free Expression.

The panel “Ida B. and Beyond: The Life, Work, and Legacy of Ida B. Wells-Barnett” was held Nov. 9 at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. The session featured moderator and JEM Assistant Professor Amber Roessner, who studies the media’s construction of race and gender.

Director’s Choice.

The chosen photographs range in style from portraiture to architecture, and include subjects from a Holocaust liberator— “an extraordinary face, one of my favorites photographically,” said Heller— to the wafting gray hair of American bluegrass musician Del McCoury— “I’m always looking for something different.”

Heller says the opportunity to participate in juried exhibits exemplifies his work not as only a photojournalist but as a fine arts photographer.

Bonnie Hufford! She was one of six women honored on Aug. 15 at the YWCA Tribute to Women celebration. Hufford was recognized for her outstanding public service in journalism and through the American Cancer Society. 

For the 29th year, the YWCA recognized women dedicated to equality, empowerment and transformation in East Tennessee. Six of 21 Tribute to Women finalists were announced as award winners at the event at the Bijou Theatre. 

Along with Hufford, the 2013 Tribute to Women Honorees are: Krissy DeAlejandro, Rachel Ford, Janice, Gina Tourassi and Kelly Tiller.
