JEM Students to Intern at New York City Magazines this Summer
JEM Seniors Flora Theden, Zac Ellis, Hillary McDaniels, and Jordan Lawson (left to right) will be interning at various magazines in New York City this summer.
Theden will be working with Shape magazine in their Lifestyles & Fitness department.
Ellis will be working at an editorial intern with Men’s Journal.
McDaniels will also be working with Men’s Journal with their photography department.
Lawson will be at Country Living as an editorial intern.
6 JEM Science Writing Students Receive Blakely Awards
Six JEM students have received Blakely Awards in the category of Science Writing from the East Tennessee chapter of the Society for Technical Communication.
Marlene Taylor received the Graduate Student Award of Distinction.
Alix Pfennigwerth and Michelle LaVone both received the Undergraduate Student Award of Distinction.
Miriam Kramer and Eric Gedenk both received the Award of Excellence.
Charli Kerns won the Award of Merit.
Since the East Tennessee Chapter of the STC expanded its Blakely technical writing awards to include science writing students in 2006, students taking JEM science writing courses have won awards every year.

JEM Students Collaborate on “Eyes on LaFollette” Project
JEM Professor Robert Heller, along with his 490 Advance Photography class, spent 30 hours in LaFollette, Tennessee documenting life there as part of the 2011 edition of “Eyes on LaFollette.”
This is the 14th edition of the project which began in 1993. The students took nearly 7,000 photos in the northern Tennessee town.
Some of the activities documented were a local church’s Friday night fish fry, a senior center excercise class, and the rounds of the local meals on wheels program.
