Film Fest Fan Favorite
JEM’s very own film, Teach a Man to Fish, has won the audience favorite award for short documentary at the Knoxville Film Fest! The twelve-minute film was produced by journalism professor Nick Geidner, sophomore Hannah Marley, junior Maxwell Baker, and graduate student Clinton Elmore.

Student Turns Experience into Job
A recent graduate of the School of Journalism and Electronic Media, Taylor Hathorn, discovered her passion while working on the Medal of Honor Project and managed to turn that experience as a student into a job.
Hathorn spent her senior year volunteering as the managing editor with the Medal of Honor Project, a service-learning collaboration for the 2014 Medal of Honor Convention which will be held this month in Knoxville. Hathorn has now been hired at the Medal of Honor Foundation in Washington, D.C. to manage their outreach and logistics.

MOH Project covers event at Supreme Court
Students and faculty from the Medal of Honor Project visited Washington, D.C. on March 24 to cover a private screening of the documentary Medal of Honor: The History. Associate Justice Samuel Alito, Jr. hosted the event at the United States Supreme Court for 30 Medal of Honor recipients. The film’s premiere fell on the eve of National Medal of Honor Day.
Senior Taylor Hathorn and sophomore Katherine Donnelly reported on the event. MOH Project Director and JEM Assistant Professor Nick Geidner also attended.

Geidner to serve on ETSPJ panel
As Knoxville prepares to host the 2014 Medal of Honor Convention, the East Tennessee Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists will host an expert panel to discuss how news media cover veterans. The event will be held Saturday, Feb. 22 at 10:30 a.m. in the meeting room of the Bearden Branch Library.
Veteran journalists Ed Hooper and Fred Brown will join Dr. Nick Geidner, a JEM assistant professor and the director of the Medal of Honor project. WBIR anchor John Becker will moderate. The event is free and open to the public.
MOH Project interviews sole surviving recipient from Tennessee
The Medal of Honor Project traveled to Chattanooga Friday, Feb. 7 to interview WWII Medal of Honor recipient Charles Coolidge.
Coolidge, 92, is the only living MOH recipient from Tennessee, and one of 32 recipients hailing from the Volunteer state. He received his medal for actions in France as a technical sergeant in the U.S. Army.
JEM graduate student Joe Kuczynski interviewed Coolidge who shared freely about his life and legacy for over an hour and a half. The raw footage from the interview is posted on the MOH Project website.

Pioneering j-projects honored at campus event
Two innovative projects championed by the School of Journalism and Electronic Media were recognized during a reception in the Scripps Lab on Sept. 26, 2013.
In his introduction, School of Journalism Director Peter Gross told guests that the Tennessee Journalism Series and the Medal of Honor Project have the potential to greatly affect campus as a whole.
“Stay tuned because we’re doing even more great stuff,” said Gross.

The Tennessee Journalism Series is a set of multimedia textbooks developed by JEM for the iPad. Twelve textbooks are available for high school and collegiate journalism courses.

Medal of Honor Project heads to convention
The Medal of Honor Project is on the move.
Four students and two staff from the School of Journalism and Electronic Media will be in Gettysburg, Pa. from Thursday to Sunday to report from the 2013 Medal of Honor Convention.
JEM students Jake Thompson, Taylor Hathorn, Kyle Knell and Jackie DelPilar will document the 2013 convention before the Congressional Medal of Honor Society’s flag is passed to Knoxville for the 2014 convention next September.
The students will interview Medal of Honor recipients, their families and a number of celebrities and dignitaries attending the convention.
