Newsletter Practicum Program: Expectations and Experience Outline
Students participating in AHCC practicum will be expected to meet the following expectations:
• 2-4 Hours of work per week; towards interviews for their articles, writing, and editing their individual articles.
• Student journalists will choose a story to pursue the first week of the month and will submit for approval. Once approved, students are free to work on their story at their own weekly pace, so long as they meet all of their broad deadlines.
• We will meet monthly prior to the publication of each issue of the newsletter, Typically the Friday prior to the last week of the month. Attendance is mandatory for all members. Meetings will be held virtually via Microsoft Teams.
• Each student is responsible for writing and editing one article per month, unless communicated clearly with valid reason why they cannot in advance.
• Meeting your deadlines is essential to the operation of the newsletter. Stories should be submitted for final approval and editing the final week of the month with any necessary alterations happening during that week. Articles are published in the newsletter the first week of each month.
Criteria for Articles:
• Centered around the city/county of Knoxville, primarily focusing on the black/East Knoxville community.
• Ties back to Alliance House’s mission statement or current projects at Alliance House in some capacity.
• Racial and/or health disparities
Examples of acceptable articles:
*Racial disparities in KUB disconnections (African American community make up over three quarters of KUB disconnections)
*Coverage of November local elections and candidates participating.
* Alliance House hosts 4th annual African American Breast Cancer Awareness week to bring awareness to disparities between black and white women with breast cancer
*Lack of shelter and restroom facilities at Knoxville Greyhound bus stop causes growing health concerns
• Alliance House will, in some instances, provide students with contact information for interviews or will provide story suggestions, however, it is primarily up to the student to choose a story for the month that fits the above criteria and receive approval to pursue it.
