Description of Opportunity
WUOT practicum opportunities: 6 students per calendar year
WUOT News 91.9FM is Knoxville’s NPR affiliate. The station accepts two practicum students each semester (Fall, Spring and Summer). Ideally, students work ~2 hours per day – those hours can be flexible anywhere between 8am and 5pm. Students must fulfill 150 hours of work time over the semester. Students also have the option to work on two or three days of the week for a longer stretch, if working every day is not an option. This practicum fulfills the requirements for JEM 492.

Students should:
• Be majors in Journalism and Media with a strong interest in news
• Have strong media writing skills and a developing sense of good news judgment
• Be willing to cover press conferences or other live events outside of the office from time to time (most likely with another reporter, depending on experience/comfort level)
• Be willing to learn software and technologies used in radio and digital spaces, including Adobe Audition, Enco, and the station’s content management platforms.
• Be able to commit to a regular schedule and be a reliable, professional presence at the station
• Be able to commit to NPR’s ethics standards for the duration of the practicum
Students will have the opportunity to:
• Help write daily newscasts and pitch story ideas
