Scovel Hosting AEJMC Podcast on Sports Communication

Assistant Professor Shannon Scovel presenting at the 2024 AEJMC Conference. Scovel is the host of a new AEJMC podcast on sports communication.
For School of Journalism and Media Assistant Professor Shannon Scovel, podcasts have been a useful resource during her academic career. So, she has always been interested in offering a similar service for others.
That opportunity has finally come with the launch of the new Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) Sports Communication Interest Group podcast.
Scovel said she was inspired to do a podcast after seeing the great work the AEJMC History group was doing with their own. She enjoys making the concepts and theories presented at conferences more accessible and introducing listeners to some of the people behind the research.
She added the podcast is also her way to contribute to the sports communication interest group since starting as the group’s research co-chair.
The target audience for the podcast is sports media academics, graduate students, and anyone curious about some of the research being conducted in the media field and learning more about the interest group.
“My dream vision for the podcast is that it not only helps introduce listeners to influential and up-and-coming scholars and their ideas but also that it potentially bridges the gap between industry and academia,” Scovel said. “Beyond that though, I just hope the podcast helps expose listeners to new research and helps explain that research in ways that can help people when writing literature reviews or thinking about future projects.”
She added it could also help first-time AEJMC conference attendees and graduate students who may feel overwhelmed by the experience to make early connections to the community.
The podcast is available on Apple Podcast and Spotify.
