Expand Your Horizons
Having an expanded worldview is a valuable addition to any student’s college journey, and our study abroad program, networking trips, and conference trips provide an excellent opportunity to learn more about journalism and media in other parts of the country and world.
We did a lot of reporting in the fields, we were thrown right into it so it was very scary but that made it rewarding. It was amazing. It was like no other class I’ve really taken.”
Diana Dalton
undergraduate student at the School of Journalism and Media who went on the Prague “Going on Assignment” trip in 2022

Cover the 2024 Paralympics in Paris
Professor Erin Whiteside is leading a group of students to cover the 2024 Paralympics in Paris. We have the opportunity to bring on two to four additional students. Please consider taking advantage of this opportunity to cover one of the biggest international sporting events in the world.
Details
The School of Journalism and Media will be partnering with USA Today to cover the 2024 Paralympics in Paris. Students will work alongside professional sports media from around the world, stay in the media lodging area in Olympic/Paralympic village.
The College of Communication and Information is funding the trip. Students will be responsible for a few meals, but all travel lodging, some meals and other related expenses will be covered by the college.
Prior to the event, students will be required to enroll in a second-session asynchronous summer school course called Sports Media and the Paralympics. Students will work on initial reporting with USA Today, conduct background reporting to prepare for the trip, work out assignments, and also learn about the Paris, the various events, and how to fairly and ethically cover adapted sport.
Who can apply
Anyone who will be attending school through the summer and beyond (seniors taking summer school this summer or rising juniors/sophomores) is invited to apply. It is a competitive application process. To apply, send Professor Whiteside your resume, names of two references, and several work samples to ewhites2@utk.edu.
Writers and photographers with experience covering sports are strongly encouraged to apply. If you applied last spring, you will be considered, and if you want to update your work examples, please do so.
The application deadline is Jan. 20, 2024.
If you have any questions, please email ewhites2@utk.edu.
