SPJ trip provides networking opportunities in New York
While spring break is traditionally a time to hit the beach or travel to warmer climates, students from the school of Journalism and Electronic Media recently spent their break learning from industry professionals in New York City.
Organized by the student-led university chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists, Dr. Catherine Luther, and Professor Stuart Brotman, the trip took fourteen students — spanning broadcast, visual communication, sports journalism, and academic research concentrations — to the historic nexus of the media industry.

Mark of Excellence: Smith wins national SPJ award
A feature story written for the Chattanooga Times Free Press by a student in the School of Journalism and Electronic Media has won a national journalism award.
“A Home and Hope,” written by JEM graduate student Millicent Smith, won first place in the Society of Professional Journalists’ Mark of Excellence Awards for Feature Writing, Large School Division for newspapers. She advanced to the national competition after placing first in Region 12.

Harmon wins 2013 Sigma Delta Chi award
A portfolio of five Knoxville News Sentinel columns has earned Dr. Mark D. Harmon a 2013 Sigma Delta Chi award from the Society of Professional Journalists. The distinguished award was based on Harmon’s general column writing for a publication with a circulation under 100,000.
“I think column writing can be a bridge between the research and evidence required of good academia but also the popular writing of good journalists,” said Harmon.
Judges chose the winners from 1,800 entries in categories covering print, radio, television and online. The awards recognize outstanding work published or broadcast in 2013.

JEM Student Awarded 1st Place in SPJ Mark of Excellence Competition
JEM Senior Zac Ellis placed first in the Society of Professional Journalists’ Region 12 Mark of Excellence Awards in the category of Sports Writing.
Ellis currently serves as the Editor in Chief for the The Daily Beacon, and previously interned with Sports Illustrated in Summer 2010 through an internship from the American Society of Magazine Editors.
