Journalism Summer Workshop
The School of Journalism and Electronic Media welcomed over forty high school students and teachers from Tennessee and Mississippi to campus for a workshop on July 17th and 18th.
These young students attended sessions about interviewing, newswriting techniques, news style and basics of storytelling taught by Dr. Nick Geidner, JEM assistant professor; Rachel McClelland, Director of Student Publications; and Lisa Byerley Gary, JEM senior lecturer. The students were also able to tour the facilities including the WUTK radio station, TVC cable channel, and The Daily Beacon to experience first hand what happens in a media setting.

WUTK Radio Office Manager Shiela Hawkins receives Employee of the Month award
WUTK Office Manager, Shiela Hawkins is the Most Courteous Employee of the Month. Shiela was nominated for the award by students and peers and was named “Most Courteous” by the University of Tennessee’s Office of Human Resources. The award was presented by representatives of the Positive Recognition Committee as well as Director of the School of Journalism and Electronic Media, Dr. Peter Gross and WUTK Program Director, Benny Smith. Hawkins received a one-month reserved parking spot, a gift certificate to the UT Bookstore, flowers, and cupcakes.

Benny Smith, General Manager of WUTK 90.3 The Rock and JEM Lecturer named Advertising Educator of the Year
Benny Smith, general manager of WUTK-FM, received a Big Wig award for Advertising Educator of the Year from the Knoxville Chapter of the American Advertising Federation.
“Our annual Big Wig Awards recognized the unsung heroes of the ad world–printers, video gurus, interactive geniuses, etc.–that make us all look good,” according to the AAF website.

WUTK 90.3 The Rock named in Men’s Health Magazine “20 Coolest College Radio Stations”
University of Tennessee college radio station WUTK 90.3 The Rock, which has called the basement of Andy Holt Tower home for 30 years, has been named in the Men’s Health Magazine “20 Coolest College Radio Stations.”
Specialty shows “Kill Ugly Radio” on Wednesday nights and “Acoustic Cafe” on Saturday mornings were named as shows to listen for.
WUTK is no stranger to awards. Earlier this year, they were awarded the title of “Most Improved College Radio Station in North America” at the 2011 College Music Journal (CMJ) Awards.

The School of Journalism and Electronic Media’s student-produced, non-commercial, independent radio station, 90.3 The Rock, turns 30 this year and to celebrate, WUTKRadio.com has a brand new look. The new site features WUTK Unplugged exclusive videos, a calendar of specialty shows, a live stream, a calendar of events, concerts, music news and much more!
WUTK-FM is an independent, non-commercial college radio station owned by the University of Tennessee and operated by the School of Journalism and Electronic Media. WUTK’s content — music, news, and sports shows are student produced.
WUTK wins most improved station at CMJ 2011 awards
WUTK 90.3 FM, The University of Tennessee’s student-run modern rock radio station was voted as the station showing “Biggest Improvement” in the College Music Journal’s 2011 College Radio Awards, held October 20 on the NYU campus in New York City.
Over 600 non-commercial and college radio stations across North America were eligible for the award, and WUTK was one of five finalists.
