UT Kappa Tau Alpha Honor Society Initiates New Members

Nine students from the School of Journalism and Media and the Tombras School of Advertising and Public Relations were initiated into the Willis C. Tucker chapter of Kappa Tau Alpha Honor Society on Monday.

Friends and family gathered in the College of Communication and Information lobby on Monday to celebrate the newest cohort of students to be inducted into the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Kappa Tau Alpha Honor Society chapter.

Bishop and Childers Appointed to CCI Associate Dean Roles

Two internal searches for associate deans who will further the strategic vision for the College of Communication and Information’s continuing growth have been concluded with exceptional candidates being appointed to each. 

Tombras School of Advertising and Public Relations Professor and Interim Director of the School of Journalism and Media Courtney Childers will step into the new role of associate dean for academic affairs and student success; and School of Information Sciences Professor Wade Bishop will step into associate dean for faculty development. Childers and Bishop will begin their appointments on July 1, 2024.

Graduating Senior Tucker Harlin Grateful For Hands-On Experiences In Journalism

Graduating senior Tucker Harlin always had an interest in sports.

Not so much playing sports, but rather a fascination with what goes into covering sports. His interest led him to get involved in a broadcasting class in high school. He also prepared news packages for the high school television station,worked as a color announcer for his high school football team, and delivered play-by-play commentary for basketball and one baseball game.

Graduating Senior Ainslee Raasch Named CCI’s First TEGNA Producer-In-Residence

First-generation graduating senior Ainslee Raasch and her family regularly tune in to watch WBIR-TV, Channel 10. 

So, when she shared that she will work at the station this summer as a producer, they were overjoyed.

“It was super, super exciting when I got the call that I had gotten this job with WBIR,” Raasch said. “That is the news station most of my family watches, so they were incredibly excited for me. It was like I told them that I was going to be working for a celebrity. It was super adorable.”

UT Alumnus Teaching Course in Sports Promotion and Branding while Working for UT Athletics

Tombras School of Advertising and Public Relations adjunct lecturer Josh Lively (‘16, ‘19) holds many roles at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. In addition to teaching, he serves as an assistant director for strategic communications at Tennessee Athletics, where he’s responsible for overseeing the media relations of the men’s and women’s swimming and diving, and volleyball programs. Additionally, he oversees the student intern program for the media relations office.

Lumos Media Services, GSMNP Partnering To Create Videos Highlighting National Park

Last summer, the Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GSMNP) sought a video production company to collaborate with on making a training video for park employees and volunteers.

Park volunteer and College of Communication and Information alumnus Steve Staley (’79), who has more than 40 years in experience in the film industry, suggested reaching out to his alma mater to see if they could recruit some students to help.

WUOT Practicum Expands Opportunities for Journalism Junior Pierce Gentry

Though junior Pierce Gentry has a good bit of journalism experience under his belt, he was still a bit surprised to be put on air the very first week of his practicum at WUOT 91.9 FM.

“Day one we were writing scripts for the afternoon newscast to be read on air. So literally the first day my words were read on air, which was amazing. That very first week I was given the opportunity to have my voice on air,” he said.

Scovel Named National Wrestling Media Association Journalist Of The Year

When Assistant Professor Shannon Scovel and her father attended the 2017 NCAA wrestling championships, it was a special moment both personally and professionally for the wrestling beat journalist.

After covering the early sessions for American University, Scovel joined her father in the stands. It had been thirty years since her father, who competed in the 1987 NCAA wrestling championships for the University of Maryland, returned to a national tournament.
