Come Hail or High Water: UT Journalism Students Delve into Extreme Weather
Melanie Faizer, senior lecturer in UT’s College of Communication and Information’s School of Journalism and Electronic Media, encourages her digital news reporting students to sleuth out hard-hitting stories on significant news topics.
This fall their mission is to report on extreme weather issues, and the students are writing about everything from mosquito-borne illnesses to future fire risks in the Smokies to the way tobacco farmers are converting their fields to hemp.
Their stories, with accompanying info-graphics, will be presented online. Associate Professor Nick Geidner’s “Social Journalism” class is creating a Facebook page to promote the work, too.

A JEM Special Topics Course is Making UT News
Entrepreneurial Journalism received university recognition for its timely and innovative course material. Tennessee Today wrote:
“Melanie Faizer, journalism lecturer, is teaching the course. She recently completed a fellowship at the Scripps Howard Journalism Entrepreneurship Institute at Arizona State University’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication…‘I want the students to take away a sense of excitement about the possibilities in the industry,’ said Faizer. ‘I want them to get an idea about the language around a start-up and gain a familiarity and comfort in the business.’”

Gross and Faizer speak at international conference
Director Peter Gross gave a keynote address at the 2013 Media Convergence conference at Babes-Bolyai University in Cluj, Romania. Gross’ lecture was titled “Breaking out of the box: The need for a reorientation in mass communication theories.” Lecturer Melanie Faizer also attended the conference and presented a paper, “Online intercollegiate news network enables learning through teaching.”
