Student Media Organizations Announce Leadership Teams For 2024-2025 Academic Year

Student media organizations at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, have announced their student leadership teams for the 2024-2025 academic year.

The incoming student leaders for Ablaze magazine, The Daily Beacon, Lumos Media Services and The Volunteer Channel (TVC) were recently selected following a very competitive process.

UT Alumnus Teaching Course in Sports Promotion and Branding while Working for UT Athletics

Tombras School of Advertising and Public Relations adjunct lecturer Josh Lively (‘16, ‘19) holds many roles at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. In addition to teaching, he serves as an assistant director for strategic communications at Tennessee Athletics, where he’s responsible for overseeing the media relations of the men’s and women’s swimming and diving, and volleyball programs. Additionally, he oversees the student intern program for the media relations office.

Lumos Media Services, GSMNP Partnering To Create Videos Highlighting National Park

Last summer, the Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GSMNP) sought a video production company to collaborate with on making a training video for park employees and volunteers.

Park volunteer and College of Communication and Information alumnus Steve Staley (’79), who has more than 40 years in experience in the film industry, suggested reaching out to his alma mater to see if they could recruit some students to help.

Scovel Named National Wrestling Media Association Journalist Of The Year

When Assistant Professor Shannon Scovel and her father attended the 2017 NCAA wrestling championships, it was a special moment both personally and professionally for the wrestling beat journalist.

After covering the early sessions for American University, Scovel joined her father in the stands. It had been thirty years since her father, who competed in the 1987 NCAA wrestling championships for the University of Maryland, returned to a national tournament.

Levering Named Rock Solid Sports Director at WUTK

It was an opportunity too good to pass up.

That’s how School of Journalism and Electronic Media senior Chloe Levering described her thought process when offered the sports director position for the Rock Solid Sports on WUTK 90.3 The Rock.

JEM Students Explore Representation of Social Groups in Mass Media

As part of the School of Journalism and Electronic Media’s JREM 466 Media, Diversity and Society class, students produced video essays examining how different social groups are represented in mass media.

The student video essays were submitted as part of JREM 466 Spring 2023 Video Essay Festival where a panel of JEM faculty judged the competition. Winners were announced at the end of the spring 2023 semester.

JEM student attends 2023 White House Correspondents’ Dinner

Abby Ann Ramsey knew she wanted to major in journalism since middle school.

The School of Journalism and Electronic Media senior is fascinated with storytelling and enjoys writing stories focusing on the human connection.

So, when she learned professors nominated her to represent the University of Tennessee, Knoxville at the 2023 White House Correspondents’ Dinner in April, she felt honored they had enough faith to recommend her for such an opportunity.

“Seize the day”: JEM alum Ryan McGee delivers 2023 commencement address

Speaking at the 2023 College of Communication and Information commencement ceremony on Friday, May 19, McGee said there are those who put down today’s generation and lament about the future.
