Alumna Cecelia Prewett Sees Her Study Abroad Scholarship Impact by Joining Ireland Trip

When Cecelia Prewett (’93) was studying journalism at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, she had one of the most impactful experiences of her life when she participated in a study abroad trip to the Netherlands.

“It changed my life. So, when I was asked to join the Board of Visitors and they said, ‘You can do direct giving or give to the general fund.’ I said immediately I want to help change somebody’s life like mine was,” she said.

Scovel Named National Wrestling Media Association Journalist Of The Year

When Assistant Professor Shannon Scovel and her father attended the 2017 NCAA wrestling championships, it was a special moment both personally and professionally for the wrestling beat journalist.

After covering the early sessions for American University, Scovel joined her father in the stands. It had been thirty years since her father, who competed in the 1987 NCAA wrestling championships for the University of Maryland, returned to a national tournament.

Students Learn About British Sports Media During Study Abroad Trip to the UK

Levering Named Rock Solid Sports Director at WUTK

It was an opportunity too good to pass up.

That’s how School of Journalism and Electronic Media senior Chloe Levering described her thought process when offered the sports director position for the Rock Solid Sports on WUTK 90.3 The Rock.

Other obligations such as working at VFL Films and being part of the Pride of Southland Marching Band at first made her worry about her capability to do a good job.

JEM Students Explore Representation of Social Groups in Mass Media

As part of the School of Journalism and Electronic Media’s JREM 466 Media, Diversity and Society class, students produced video essays examining how different social groups are represented in mass media.

The student video essays were submitted as part of JREM 466 Spring 2023 Video Essay Festival where a panel of JEM faculty judged the competition. Winners were announced at the end of the spring 2023 semester.

JEM student attends 2023 White House Correspondents’ Dinner

Abby Ann Ramsey knew she wanted to major in journalism since middle school.

The School of Journalism and Electronic Media senior is fascinated with storytelling and enjoys writing stories focusing on the human connection.

So, when she learned professors nominated her to represent the University of Tennessee, Knoxville at the 2023 White House Correspondents’ Dinner in April, she felt honored they had enough faith to recommend her for such an opportunity.

Ryan McGee at 2023 CCI CommencementESPN writer, broadcaster and School of Journalism and Electronic Media alum Ryan McGee (’93) encouraged the graduating class of 2023 to “seize the day.”

Speaking at the 2023 College of Communication and Information commencement ceremony on Friday, May 19, McGee said there are those who put down today’s generation and lament about the future. He believes those who buy in to these lowest denominator generalizations of Generation Z have not been among them.

Harrison Explores Challenges of Female Sportscasters in New Book
